You can't mistake the Spirit. Unless it's telling you that Mormonism is false. Then you've mistaken it. A lot.
- We have new Mormon missionaries in the area. I had this interesting conversation with one of them.
- Elder: "Just pray and the Holy Spirit will tell you if these things are true."
- Me: "The bible says in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that the Devil disguises himself as an angel of light... is it possible to be tricked by him?"
- Elder: "Yes, it's possible."
- Me: "So if I pray about the Book of Mormon to see if it's true and get confimation, how do I know that it's the Holy Spirit and not the devil tricking me?"
- Elder: "Oh you can't mistake the Spirit. When it's the Spirit, you'll know. The Spirit can't be mistaken and won't lead you astray."
- Me: "Okay. So I have something to tell you."
- Elder: "Alright."
- Me: "When I prayed about the Book of Mormon, the Holy Spirit told me that it was false."
- *silence*
- Me: "You there, Elder?"
- Elder: "It - it wasn't the Holy Spirit."
- Me: "Oh but it was. You can't mistake the Spirit. Right?"
- Elder: "It couldn't have been, though."
- Me: "Are you telling me that I mistook the Spirit, right after you told me that that's impossible to do?
- *Silence*
- Elder: "I have to go. Call us if you have any more questions. Have a good afternoon."
- *click*
- I'm detecting a double-standard here.
